Namma WordPress: Bengaluru already runs on it, and it speaks Kannada

ಕನ್ನಡ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು. Happy Kannada Rajyotsava. District websites across Karnataka, Kannada news and the city’s stages and campuses run on WordPress, and volunteers have put 95% of WordPress into Kannada.

This post shows where WordPress already is, what the dashboard looks like in Kannada, the people who translated it, and where you come in.

General Admission is ₹800 for both days, lunch included.

ಕನ್ನಡ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು.

Happy Kannada Rajyotsava.

You’ve probably used WordPress today without seeing its name. Switch it to Kannada, and it answers in Kannada.

Today, 1 November, Karnataka marks the day in 1956 when the Kannada-speaking regions came together as one state. So here’s the WordPress around you, the Kannada it already speaks, and the volunteers who put it there.

Suresha, Riyaz, Arun, Mayank and Yusuf, a line each, then the last one together.

01

It’s already around you

Open your district’s website. Bengaluru Urban, Mysuru, Belagavi and Kalaburagi all open in Kannada, and all run on WordPress. District sites sit on S3WaaS, the platform the National Informatics Centre built on WordPress for government offices, and more than 3,100 government websites have moved onto it. The district court websites for Bengaluru and Mysuru run on it too.

Your news is there as well, and so are the city’s campuses, stages and galleries. So is Bangalore International Centre in Domlur, where WordCamp Bengaluru’s Contributor Day happens.

None of them puts WordPress on the front page. Good software doesn’t need to.

02

It speaks Kannada

Switch WordPress to Kannada and the whole dashboard follows. These words come straight from the official Kannada language pack for WordPress 7.1.4.

The top bar greets you with ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ instead of “Howdy”. And the first post on every new site, “Hello world!”, arrives as ಹಲೋ ವರ್ಲ್ಡ್!

// try_it

Open playground.wordpress.net/?language=kn and a complete WordPress starts in your browser, in Kannada. Close the tab and it’s gone.

Every word here is WordPress’s own, paired with the English label it replaces.

03

The people who translated it

None of this is machine translation. People wrote every Kannada line in WordPress, and an editor approves each one before it goes live.

Suggest a translation

That gap is open to anyone who reads Kannada. You suggest translations at translate.wordpress.org, one phrase at a time, signed in with a WordPress.org account, the same one you need to buy a WordCamp ticket. An editor checks every suggestion, and none of it needs code.

Contributor Day

Contributors spend the day working on WordPress itself, at Bangalore International Centre. A WordCamp ticket makes you eligible at no extra cost, but seats are limited and take their own sign-up, which opens closer to the date.

The talks

Sunday is at St Joseph’s Boys’ High School on Museum Road. If you publish for Karnataka, in Kannada or in English, three short Concert Hall talks are for you.

WordCamp is where the people behind sites like these get together: developers, designers, editors, translators and people who taught themselves. Bring a question about a site you use, or one you’d like to build, in English or in Kannada.

The Kannada name sits next to ours at the top of every page of this site. Namma WordPress, in both scripts.
