Walk through the heart of Bengaluru, uncovering the historical gems that shaped the city’s vibrant character. From ancient fortresses to pioneering medical institutions, and cultural sanctuaries, each destination on this trail offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Bengaluru’s past and present.

Let’s take a look at the places we plan to explore together in this guided tour. At the end of this blog, you can find a registration form to participate in this walk. There is no cost associated to participate but you need to have a valid WordCamp Bengaluru 2023 ticket.

Bengaluru Fort

Built-in the 16th century by Kempe Gowda, the visionary founder of Bengaluru, the Bengaluru Fort was strategically situated to protect the city from potential invasions. Its robust architecture and well-planned layout made it an essential stronghold during times of unrest. Over the centuries, the fort has witnessed the rise and fall of various dynasties, including the reign of Tipu Sultan and the British colonial rule. Today, though much of the original fort has given way to urban development, visitors can still explore its remaining bastions and gateways, evoking a sense of awe and wonder at the city’s historical origins.

Victoria Hospital

Established during the British colonial era in 1900, this hospital was named after Queen Victoria. Initially serving as a military hospital, it played a vital role in providing medical care to British officers and Indian soldiers during wars and conflicts. With time, the hospital expanded its services, becoming one of the pioneering medical institutions in Bengaluru. Its contributions to medical research and education have been remarkable, making it a revered center for healthcare in the city. Vani Vilas Hospital

Founded in 1935, Vani Vilas Hospital holds a special place in Bengaluru’s medical history. Named after the then-Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV’s mother, Queen Smt. Kempa Nanjammani, who was addressed as Vani Vilasa Sannidhana by the inmates of the palace. The hospital has been at the forefront of providing healthcare services to the city’s residents. Over the years, it has undergone significant expansions and modernization to meet the growing healthcare needs. Kote Sri Prasanna Venkataramana Swamy Temple

This temple holds a special place in Bengaluru’s spiritual heritage. The temple’s architecture, with its intricate carvings and ornate pillars, reflects the fine craftsmanship of a bygone era. Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute

Established in 1955, BMCRI has played a crucial role in shaping Bengaluru’s medical landscape. Tipu Sultan’s Armoury

VB Bakery

No history walk in Bengaluru would be complete without a culinary stop at VB Bakery, a living testament to the city’s delectable past. Founded during the pre-independence era, VB Bakery has been serving its mouthwatering treats to generations of Bengalureans. From its famous buttery puffs and crispy biscuits to its irresistible cakes, the bakery’s recipes have stood the test of time, preserving the city’s culinary heritage. A visit to VB Bakery is not just about indulging in delicious treats but also about immersing oneself in the nostalgia and traditions that have made Bengaluru’s food culture so diverse and cherished.

This takes into account delays, sightseeing and stops. The exact assembly point and the different ways to reach there will be provided to the participants via email. Please note, the participants are expected to arrive at the assembly point, no official transport will be provided by the WordCamp.
